Congratulations to Power BI User Group Leader @Tom Gough and the West Midland PUG for winning the May Leader Challenge.
We talked with the group’s leadership to learn more about the local Power BI User Group and plans for 2019.
What has been the most exciting thing for your PUG so far?
I think the most exciting thing so far was getting the first meeting up and running. We had about 15 attendees which, while not huge, felt like a massive group when we were just starting out, and getting the support of the Wesleyan to host the event for us was amazing (the Wesleyan are a very well known company here in Birmingham with a history going back over 150 years).
What makes your group successful?
One of the key factors to our success has been engagement with local businesses, which has given us facilities to host events and help drive our membership. A real focus has been getting engagement from the members to speak and present the ways in which they are using Power BI - as a result, we have as yet not needed to look outside the group for speakers. I think that is helping to foster a real sense of community and engagement.
Tell us about your plans for 2019?
The main plan for 2019 is to try to spread the group properly across the West Midlands region. So far, we have been quite Birmingham focused, which is somewhat inevitable as it is the largest city in the region, but I want the group to include the whole area. Hopefully, around September, we will be able to arrange events in Coventry, and I am now looking forward to having events into Wolverhampton as well. It may take some time, but I am determined to get it there.
