If you have only ever played in the Power BI Desktop, and never ventured into the Power BI Service, you may not be aware of what a Workspace is.  But once you start using the Service, you will definitely need to understand what workspaces are and how they function. In  March, I am going to tackle this subject in a webinar and a discussion group. (Check back under the Webinars tab to register for these two events.) First of all, let's talk about the Service. If you have never been to the Service, click  here to create an account.  Once you have gotten into the Service, the first thing you will notice is Workspaces and My Workspace . This guide is an extension of original article by Soheil Bakhshi . It shows how to add parameters, use them in R-based function and add some global environment references controls for more comfortable usage. Use this guide if you: Have relatively a small amount of data to export like a list of values or bridge tables. Want to utilize awesome Power BI ability to digest all kinds of data and use it as an ETL tool. Already applied some advanced M transformations (in my case it was Power Query data anonymization) and you want to save it back to your source database. Need to frequently export your transformed data, but don’t need to load it incrementally ...

Story by Maggie Sparkman, senior content developer at Microsoft The Power BI World Tour made a stop in Seattle, Washington from October 29 - 30, 2018 to provide unprecedented Power BI content and DeNisha Malone’s session, “Telling a Story with Data”, was an excellent example of this… Lessons from DeNisha’s session: Tell a story Reports can’t just be a bunch of numbers, or even beautiful visuals. You need to find the story the data is trying to tell, and then make it clear. Keep it simple. A few clear visualizations are more powerful than a whole bunch of them all over the place. Find free data There are lots of free data sources out there! ...

Congratulations to  @Chris Sorensen and the Calgary Power BI, PowerApps and Flow User Group for winning the December Challenge of the Month.  We spent some time with @Chris Sorensen to learn more about the group and plans for 2019.   What has been the most exciting thing for your PUG so far? It has been two things. The first being getting the group going again with some momentum after a few years of on and off meetings. We have had three meeting with new leadership and our attendance has vibe had been quite positive. The second is evolving the group from just Power BI to the new Power Platform umbrella. I feel like Power ...

Seriously – a blog post about a monthly update for a tool which gets updates every single month anyways? How much of features can this contain, you might ask. A lot, I would answer. The product blog lists 14 (!) new features  alone for the November 2018 release. And it’s not the quantity, but the quality. Yes, some are of smaller and some are of bigger capability. But the majority will make your life easier, when working with Power BI. I promise you that you will be eager to install the new version and try those features out immediately. For me it’s even hard to decide which one is my favorite: Expand/Collapse in the matrix visual, copy & paste between ...

I’ve had the opportunity to attend several Academy classes: The CRMUG Administrator Blue belt and purple belt classes, Academy Excel Power Pivot, and Academy Power BI Blue belt.  Here are my top 5 reasons for taking these classes: 1. Lifelong Learning is a Positive Experience The benefits of lifelong learning are numerous: it helps you enhance your mind and keeps your thinking sharp. Learning also keeps the creativity flowing and it’s also been scientifically proven that active learning is a great exercise for the brain- which is an area I want to keep in top shape. 2. Expands My Skill Set I love my job and where I work but that doesn’t mean I ...

Hello  I am new to this forum, so I do hope I am using the correct forum for this type of questions. I have seen and used many visuals related to various KPIs (financial and such), but I am having a hard time find the right visual to represent a Roadmap. I am currently using the Gantt visual, and Gantt visual by MAC Software, but they are a little bit limited in terms of visual representation and I find them slow at times (also text gets cropped in a weird way, etc)  I am trying to get close to what I was using in PowerPoint as the Timeline AddOn to the powerpoint. Can anyone point me in the maybe right inspirational direction? Many thanks Anca C

You can attend other group webinars and meetings with Power BI rock stars 😊 There is a lot of additional stuff. We have been at local data conferences where we mentioned that we have local Power BI User Group in Kharkiv. Hello Power BI Enthusiasts! A few months ago we published our first Power BI custom visual titled Column Chart with Variance. It's free, and you can find it  here .  So far we've had good feedback from people who have used it, but we're always interested in getting more, especially from "Power" users. Please feel free to hit us up with any comments or questions. Also, we wanted to share a little about our philosophy behind developing this visual. If you're interested in learning more, please check out our blog post .

Hi fellow Power BI enthousiasts! To properly set up the use of Power BI within your organization, it is usually necessary to give users some training. For users who only consume reports a short training, in which the possible interactions of a Power BI report are explained, is often sufficient. One way of doing this is by using a step-by-step tutorial report, that can also serve as a reference document within Power BI itself. In the past few months I have already built such a Tutorial for some of my customers, which they are now using in their Power BI Apps. For those of you who are also interested in adding a Tutorial to their Power BI environment, I am ...

In the three years since its initial release, Power BI has become widely-adopted by corporations and other organizations as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application. The Power BI Service provides licensed users with the ability to access and interact with Power BI reports and dashboards through the Power BI portal which most users access through the URL of https://app.powerbi.com. The Power BI Service also provides licensed users with a first-class mobile experience using the Power BI Mobile apps that Microsoft has published for iPhone, Android and Windows 10. Microsoft promotes Power BI along with PowerApps and Flow as the primary services in the Microsoft ...
