difference between running and publish a paginated report

  • 1.  difference between running and publish a paginated report

    Hello There,

I recently started going through resource material on Microsoft about paginated report. Could anybody help me understand the difference between a Paginated Report Definition -- Running the Report -- Publish the report (to power BI service).

I have attached the link for the source for the information where I encountered the above mentioned concern, and it is under the heading: Creating a Report definition

the title of the page: what are the paginated reports in Power BI Premium?

Thank you for giving your valuable time!

Publishing is a fancy word for save to power bi service. The publish here is no different than how you publish a pbix file to power bi service. The biggest difference and perhaps where you are getting confused, a paginated report doesn't "import" and store data like the pbix files do. The just contain instructions for how to get data from the data source, and how to display it on the screen.

You can run the report locally from your desktop with the report builder program, or you can publish (save) the report to power bi service to then be able to run it in your browser. If published to a shared workspace, all users in that workspace can run the report even if they don't have the report builder program installed.
