Power BI Exchange

I have had a strange situation occur over the last couple of months.  Over the last five years, I have created a number of Power BI reports that are published to the app.  They run off a copy of a database that is created at 3AM every morning.  At 5AM (until about 9AM, spread out), my Power BI reports are scheduled to refresh automatically.  Traditionally, when a report is open, it will default to the latest date with data.  I would be able to go in and change the date filter to whatever dates I wanted, and could always return to view the latest date with data at any point.

What has started happening is that when I open my reports, it still defaults to the latest date.  I can view that data and the numbers and revenues are all correct (indicating to me that the database backup was completed and the Power BI refresh completed correctly).  The problem that is arising is that if I switch the date range away from ending the previous day, that day is no longer available for me to select.  It is greyed out.  All the other dates show up to two days prior.  For example.  Today is April 14th.  My database copy includes sales up to and including April 13th.  When I open my Power BI report, the date filter defaults to show data for April 13th.  All the sales and revenues are accurate for what my point of sale system show for the 13th.  I then look at my sales for March 1 - 31st.  After reviewing my reports for March, I want to go back and look at my month to date reports.  But now the date selector shows April 13th as greyed out.  I cannot access it.  I can only access up to April 12th.

Refreshing the dataset does not help.
I am running the latest version of desktop. This issue is also occurring there.

I would guess that something in an update changed the mechanics of this over the last couple of months?  I've been running these reports for years and have never run into this before.  Nothing has changed in the structure of my reports, the database, etc....

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

I have a suggestion for you to try.

1. Make a new PBIX file. 
2. Using Transform, Import data into it for just Apr 14, that's the date in question right? Include the date field and 1-2 other important fields.
3. Create a simple table in it to show your data. 

Is the data for April 14 in there? If the data is in there I wonder if your original PBIX file might be corrupt.

You are seeing the problem in your published report on a website right? What about your "working" files where you make changes? Is the same problem in there?

I'm also wondering if when the database was copied, that it reported all was ok, but there was a rare error that was never trapped by your software. It happens sometimes. Software should be written to check for specific errors, then have a case that traps all other errors possible with an error message that shows as much helpful information as possible so the user can report the issue, and so the developers can look into the issue.

Ok let's take a step back then.

Can you verify the previous day's data is actually in the original database?

Can you verify all records for the problem date were actually transferred to where it's supposed to go? How can you verify this copy process? On the far left of the Desktop PBI interface, the second icon down is to look at the raw table data that PBI sees. Can you check that?

Has someone changed the data you use to copy the data from the original source? Can you double check that?

I can't remember if this year is a leap year so I don't think it's that, and you said the problem started in mid-April, not March 1. Perhaps me spouting ideas will help you get some other idea which will help.

The data from yesterday, April 18th,  is there.  It is showing in the raw data table in Power BI desktop.  No one has changed the data we use to copy the data from the original source.  I am the only one that has access to  anything to do with these reports or the sql server/database.  Last year was a leap year, so while that posed issues all of its own :), I don't believe that is the source of this issue.

What really has me scratching my head is that tomorrow the data from yesterday will be completely accessible and accurate.

Is there any way that the time of my database copy is what is affecting the timing of these report dates being viewable?  Is it possible something changed within PBI that is no longer recognizing a database copy made at 3AM as "yesterday" (even though the copy contains sales date stamped with yesterday's date).  I am reluctant to change the time my database copies as it starts to interfere with maintenance schedules, etc.....  but that is my only thought.

If we look at the time 3am between Tuesday and Wednesday, the actual date for 3am is still Wednesday even though we might call it "last night". It should always be that way. Each day starts at 12am which is midnight.

If the expected data can be viewed in the table view of your report and is available on report load, I'd suspect the date filter you're using. Is it a custom / added visual, or the default date filter? From my experience it's rare, but sometimes with Power BI updates, custom / non-Microsoft visuals behave funny or break. We generally stick to the standard visuals and use the additional visuals sparingly.
If it's not the visual itself, maybe check the filter pane and see if the other visuals, pages, or whole report have some unexpected filters applied that may be affecting behaviors. When trying to force default filters on dates, sometimes flags or values on the date dimension are used and can affect interactions after initial loading. If you built the report own the report, this may be a long shot, but worth checking.

Thank you so much for your reply!  As of this morning, the issue has resolved itself for all of my users.  It appears it was a bug from the latest update and they have obviously now fixed it!

I have had a strange situation occur over the last couple of months.  Over the last five years, I have created a number of Power BI reports that are published to the app.  They run off a copy of a database that is created at 3AM every morning.  At 5AM (until about 9AM, spread out), my Power BI reports are scheduled to refresh automatically.  Traditionally, when a report is open, it will default to the latest date with data.  I would be able to go in and change the date filter to whatever dates I wanted, and could always return to view the latest date with data at any point.

What has started happening is that when I open my reports, it still defaults to the latest date.  I can view that data and the numbers and revenues are all correct (indicating to me that the database backup was completed and the Power BI refresh completed correctly).  The problem that is arising is that if I switch the date range away from ending the previous day, that day is no longer available for me to select.  It is greyed out.  All the other dates show up to two days prior.  For example.  Today is April 14th.  My database copy includes sales up to and including April 13th.  When I open my Power BI report, the date filter defaults to show data for April 13th.  All the sales and revenues are accurate for what my point of sale system show for the 13th.  I then look at my sales for March 1 - 31st.  After reviewing my reports for March, I want to go back and look at my month to date reports.  But now the date selector shows April 13th as greyed out.  I cannot access it.  I can only access up to April 12th.

Refreshing the dataset does not help.
I am running the latest version of desktop. This issue is also occurring there.

I would guess that something in an update changed the mechanics of this over the last couple of months?  I've been running these reports for years and have never run into this before.  Nothing has changed in the structure of my reports, the database, etc....

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

This suggest me, that you have pre-set some filters.

Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions.  My reports started working again this morning, and it appears as though this was a known bug that happened for some people over the last month.

Just a stab in the dark at this .... could it be an issue with UTC datetimes and time zones?
I have seen similar issues where the dates from the host system are UTC datetime.

Another thing to check, if you are using a slicer with relative date filters, is if the 'Include Today' flag is turned on (check your Filter pane as well ...)
