Power Query Caches folder

  • 1.  Power Query Caches folder

I recently ran out of disk space on my laptop.  On reviewing my files I found that the following folder contained 118 Gigabytes.  C:\users\bbuhler\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerQuery\Cache\Caches.
I copied the files from the Caches folder to an external hard drive and deleted the contents of the folder.  It appears some code is now missing on some of my Excel Power Query workbooks.  It appears that I need at least some of the files in that folder.

Is there any documentation as to how to manage the "Power Query Caches"?  The files are in GUID format, so how to even determine what file belong to what Power Query workbook? Is there a way to determine what DAT files are no longer necessary and can be cleaned up?  Is there a way to offload the DAT files from the hard drive?

Would doing at least my reporting workbooks in Power BI desktop instead of Power Query.  Some of the Power Query workbook are used to summarize data for uploads into GP using SmartConnect.

    Hi Brian !

The cache files are used to frequently queried items, in case you loose a step in Power Query, please redefine the Transformation you think is missing from the steps.

Also you can restore the files back to cache folder, open Power BI file & perform [Save & Apply] + refresh your PBI Desktop file to see the new transformation are there.

After that you can clear up the cache folder.
