1.  Windows Store - note that there are TWO apps: Power BI Viewer, and Power BI Desktop

Posted 15 days ago

A while back I saw the notice that Power BI desktop was available in the Windows store. Which meant it would automatically update.
So I went to the Windows store and downloaded it.

But I didn't see any difference in PBI Desktop, it still required me to manually update. Hmmmm...

Then the other day I searched on my Win 10 PC for Power BI  and noticed there were two apps; Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Power BI.
So I thought I actually had downloaded the Power BI Desktop from the store and just didn't realize it installed as a second app.
But when I opened it, all I could do was view Power BI reports, etc. from my PBI service account.

So I did what everyone else does when they encounter a mystery, I asked all-knowing Google (sorry about that, Bing).
It appears there are TWO PBI apps in the windows store. A Viewer and the Desktop.

I assumed, and it got me to the usual place...

Hi Clark -

Easy to see the confusion caused by the similarities in naming.

  1. There is a windows store app that could be considered a 'tablet' app - one that is primarily a "viewer" app. - that is the "Microsoft Power BI" app in the store.

  2. Then, in the last couple of months, they have added a full desktop installer version in the app store that does keep your local copy up-to-date. - It's named "Power BI Desktop" in the store.

  3. Finally, the version of the desktop app downloaded from powerbi.com is named "Microsoft Power BI Desktop" or "Microsoft Power BI Desktop (x64)"  - this one is the one that is not in the automatic update push from the windows store.

HTH,
Scott.

OK, so that raises another question... what is the difference between the "Microsoft Power BI Desktop" you download from powerbi.com, and the "Power BI Desktop" you install from the Microsoft Store?

The big difference is in maintainability. - the windows store desktop app is automatically updated on your desktop as new versions are released, but the manually downloaded .msi package version from powerbi.com will prompt you at some point to go to the web and download/install the newest .msi.

There's a nice documentation page here that further describes the advantage of installing from the store vs the web. Get Power BI Desktop - Power BI

There are a few advantages to getting Power BI Desktop from the Windows Store:+

  • Automatic updates - Windows downloads the latest version automatically in the background as soon as it's available, so your version will always be up to date.
  • Smaller downloads - The Windows Store ensures only components that have changed in each update are downloaded to your machine, resulting in smaller downloads for each update.
  • Admin priviledge is not required - when you download the MSI directly and install, you must be an administrator for the installation to complete successfully. When you get Power BI Desktop from the Windows Store, admin priviledge is not required.
  • IT roll-out enabled - the Windows Store version can more easily be deployed, or rolled-out, to everyone in your organization, and can make Power BI Desktop available through the Microsoft Store for Business.
  • Language detection - the Windows Store version includes all supported languages, and checks which languages is being used on the computer each time it is launched. This also affects the localization of models created in Power BI Desktop; for example, built-in date hierarchies will match the language that Power BI Desktop was using when the .pbix file was created.

As far as "features" are concerned, the two 'desktop' apps are the same.  (Although at times, the manually downloaded version /might/ have the newest monthly release a week or two before it's available in the store.)

Hi Scott

In windows/area and language, my language in windows is Local and English (United States) as languages pack.

I have Power Bi Desktop from Powerbi.com on my computer for long time in English.
Now I have from W Store downloaded Power BI Desktop. PBI Desktop is now in my local language.

As you write W Store check languages on my computer.

Is there a way where I can have both. Windows in local and PBI Dektop English from W Store ?

If negative above, then the only option is PBI Desktop from PowerBI.com ?

If we today can download PBI Desktop from W Store, don't you think download from PowerBi.Com will stop in the near further ?

To day I have all my office in English. So my Excel is in English.
