Oct. 30th "Titletown, USA" Power BI User Group meeting coming up!

When:  Oct 30, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (CT)

Our third Green Bay "Titletown, USA" Power BI User Group meeting October 30th

by Steve Erbach, Director of Communications

Please make time on Wednesday, October 30th, from 2:00-5:00 for our next Power BI User Group meeting. Once again, @John Kirsch of Wipfli in Green Bay, has graciously provided our meeting site. You may register on the right-hand side of this page!

Our main speaker, @David Laster of Gravoc in Massachusetts, is flying out here to show us what may very well be the biggest Power BI dashboard ever created!

David Laster

On a conference call with Microsoft Dynamics GP User Group members last week (on the same day as our August meeting!) David revealed that he created his dashboard after being inspired by a presentation he attended at the North America Dynamic Communities Summit in Phoenix last October. That session featured Microsoft MVP @Steve Endow and me showing a refex (REFreshable EXcel workbook) for Dynamics GP Administrators. I had created the refex to help me see what was going on during the day in my job as GP Administrator.

After that session, David came up to me to tell me that he very much enjoyed my presentation and was on fire to create a Power BI version of it. I figured that it might be pretty simple to duplicate the functionality of the Excel-based dashboard (I gave it away as part of the session) in Power BI. My refex has 10 tabs and 12 SQL queries. I remember thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?"

Little did I know that David had grander plans. He has worked with Microsoft Dynamics GP for 20 years and knows far more than I do about it; about the deep-down configuration tables, information and monitoring tables, and every kind of technically-oriented table available in SQL Server for GP. He brought all of that knowledge to bear upon his Power BI dashboard project.

What he will show us is how he constructed his monumental (I'm not exaggerating) dashboard. It contains 30 (!) pages, 150 (!!) SQL queries, and 350 (!!!) Power BI tiles!!!! Holy cow!

Do not miss this meeting! If you've ever wondered about the capacity or the limits of the power of Power BI, this is the meeting to attend! David will be here, in-person, to answer your questions about putting together this amazing dashboard.

As usual, we'll also:

  • Take a look at the latest Power BI features from the September and October releases
  • Our Member Showcase presented by Kelly Mroczenski of Nature's Way Products in Green Bay
  • A couple demos of how Power BI is used at other companies
  • Enjoy Networking and discussion
  • Savor refreshments!

Here's the route to the Wipfli office (Google Maps reference: HV3R+GX Green Bay, Wisconsin; right-click on the map and click on "View image" or "Open image in new tab" to enlarge):

As you approach the Wipfli office on Security Blvd, you'll see a Wipfli sign next to the driveway into the parking lot.

If you ask Google Maps for directions, the first route it will give you involves getting off 41 at the busy Shawano Ave. exit and navigating through the 18 or so roundabouts to get to the Wipfli office. The route above is a bit longer but has way less traffic.

And here's a shot of Wipfli's very nice Green Bay office:

So just click on the  RSVP  button to the right, and we'll see you on Wednesday, October 30th at 2:00! Like, that's the day before Halloween!
