Report for non-interactive display monitor with more than one page

  • 1.  Report for non-interactive display monitor with more than one page

    Posted 11 days ago

I am creating a report for a non-interactive display monitor.  I have created this in SQL Server Reporting Service.  The problem is the report has more than one page or screen view of data so you can only see the first page or screen view.  I first created the report with no pages but that require someone to interact with the report to scroll down the report.  Then I changed it to have pages but this still required someone to flip through the pages of the report.  I need something to flip through the pages at a time interval and then go back to the first page to start over.  Or to scroll down the report and start over again.  Probably would be something like Powerpoint does for its non-interactive presentations.  The report data is always changing every hour and needs to be refreshed so we can't use Powerpoint.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?  Does PowerBI have a solution for this scenario?   I have been searching the internet with no success so far.

    Thank you,

    Fred

You could script this with Powershell. Or use iMacros, then call the iMacros from a PowerShell script, and add an API refresh.
Turning pages is just clicking a button.
Use a loop and you can set  the number of loops, or other logic based on time or whatever.

     Click button.
     Wait.
     Click button.
     Wait.
     ...
Sent API refresh call to Power BI

    Hi @Fred Schmid,

Have you considered building a local page that acts as a frame to cycle through different screens/URLs?  Here's a relatively simple one I found on GitHub: https://gist.github.com/evidanary/a10f55aafd1f26cd062f .

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

What we finally used is a Java script that selects the next page button on the web page of the SQL Server Reporting Services report
and then loops through this until it find no more pages
and then it selects the beginning page button to start all over.
We put a delay in the loop to keep it on a page for a while.  It is working great.

    Thanks,

    Fred

forgive me if I'm missing the point here, but why would you not use the Presentation mode in PowerBI?

    https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/enhancing-presentation-mode-with-slideshow-in-windows-power-bi-app/

From what I can see, you can create a multi-page report, then set it to run as a presentation, running through the pages, on a screen.

    Does this help at all?

    Andy,

I think the word "pages" is confusing things.

I think the OP has a paginated report and is using reporting services. You have to hit the arrow/page key to "turn" the pages.
The presentation view in Power BI is flipping through "tabs" (pages) in a Power BI Report, not pages in a paginated report.

But glad you brought it up because it isn't totally clear what the OP needs.

    Hi @Andy Robinson,

Interesting find! Are you finding that option somewhere in the Desktop or Web service? If so, can you share how to activate it in either of those options? From what I can tell, that option is only available using the Power BI mobile app in the Microsoft Store.

    Thanks,

So I've not used this yet. It's firmly in my plans to use next year. I just haven't found the time yet.

As far as my research, which is very limited, I believe that you can download the app to the desktop. Then just access the presentation mode.

The article previously linked also states that you can use the app on a desktop and not just on mobile. So I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to use this one some screens around the office, which are on raspberry pi's.

    Andy,

The mobile app will have presentation mode as long as it has Windows OS
I don't have the presentation mode on my iPhone, but it does show up if I download the mobile app to my Windows 10 laptop.

However, it only flips through each report tab. It does not turn pages or scroll within a report tab or visual.

I haven't tested the presentation mode with an SSRS report though.
I know you can access SSRS reports through the mobile app if you have the Power BI report server, but not sure if presentation mode works on those.

    Hope that helps.

The report needs to be refresh every hour because the data is changing.  So that means the number of pages is always changing also.
